U.S. Naval Historical Center Naval History Workshop 2003 On 24-26 June 2003, the U.S. Naval Historical Center will host the eighth in its series of biennial naval history workshops, the purpose of which is to foster the exchange of professional information and to promote mutual support among commands responsible for the Navy’s historical programs. In line with the theme of this year’s gathering, Preserving and Promoting Naval History, the program committee has developed an agenda that includes panels and workshops on the following topics: Operation Iraqi Freedom; oral history and the 9/11 attack on the Pentagon; the use of history in Navy training; the impact of terrorism on museums; new Navy and Marine Corps museums; electronic records management; combat art; the value of commemorations; artifact collection in the field; reference support to the public; and management of the Navy’s cultural resources. Participants will include serving naval officers and enlisted personnel and professional staff members from Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Army historical, museum, archival, training and educational, art and artifact, curatorial, and non-governmental organizations. Social functions will include a buffet luncheon in the Admiral Gooding Conference Center, Bldg. 22 (site of the Workshop), Washington Navy Yard, on 24 June; a reception hosted by the Naval Historical Foundation in the United States Navy Museum on 24 June; a guided tour of Library of Congress special collections on 25 June; and a guided tour of the National Museum of American history’s naval and military related exhibits on 26 June. Registration: There will be no charge for registration (except for those wishing to take lunch for $15 on Tuesday 24 June), but all attendees must register. Those in attendance will be entitled to coffee, tea, and pastries each morning; the two off-site tours; and a reception sponsored by the Naval Historical Foundation. To obtain a copy of the registration form and the program, contact the Conference Registrar, Lieutenant Commander Wanda Pompey, USN, U. S.
